After working with the national nonprofit Compassion & Choices for more than a decade to pass and implement the Our Care, Our Choice Act (OCOCA), Hawaii End of Life Options was created in August 2024 as a local group to expand on this work.
We help people understand and access the OCOCA, which authorizes the compassionate end-of-life option known as medical aid in dying (MAID) in Hawaii. Our role is to educate patients and providers, and to empower terminally ill residents seeking MAID to approach their death in a manner that aligns with their wishes and values.
Our Goals:
- Ensure that every terminally ill Hawaii resident knows that MAID is an option in this state, and has an opportunity to access it if they so desire.
- Ensure that every authorized caregiver knows they can prescribe MAID and that there is support and mentorship available.
- Assist Hawaiʻi’s hospice and healthcare provider organizations as they work to incorporate the full measure of MAID-related services alongside all other end-of-life options into their standard of care.
